My before photos tell the story. I was 39 with the body of man who no longer gave a damn. My cholesterol levels were way too high, blood pressure way too high, and scale weight was at 111.8kg. I was a sad reflection of what I had once been.
It was a trip to the GP that was the turning point for me. After receiving the bad news from my doctor about my health I said to her ‘would you believe just 5 years ago I was a trim fit aerobics instructor’. She looked at my body and said ‘no’. At that humiliating moment I knew I had to change.
I’d told my story to a friend at work who happened to know about the FMS programme. She rang me that night and said ‘I’ve signed you up for Fat Man Slim, be at training Sunday morning’. I asked whether I had any say in this and she responded ‘no’. My biggest supporter, my wife, agreed I had no choice.
Well, the after photo tells the story. I’m 106.5kg on the scale. But more importantly my body fat went from 27.1kg to 19.4kgs - a wonderful 7.7kg drop in body fat. On my final training night, I performed 105 full press-ups. When I started just 6 weeks earlier I did 5 and collapsed.
My cholesterol is within normal limits and my blood pressure is normal again. But the big change has been at home. My wife says I don’t snore anymore. My daughters (all 3 of them) love seeing their new (old) daddy back again. I have all the energy I need to play with them. Number 4 in the family is due in 6 weeks time and I love the fact that bubba’s first view of me will be a fit and healthy me.
I can’t thank the trainers at Fat Man Slim enough. They are all women trainers and they are as tough as nails. There is no shirking and they don’t accept ‘I can’t do it’ as a response. But the thing that truly made me want to work at their programme was that I felt they genuinely cared about my health. I wasn’t just a person come along to help pay the bills for them. If I missed a session (and I did miss one) they got on the phone to ask where I was. They constantly reiterated the need for us as Men to be healthy for ourselves and for our wives/partners and children.
And my last thanks is to the boys I went through the programme with. There was a great sense of ‘we’re all in this together’. We encouraged each other, celebrated any great weekly results, and made each other work hard.
Cheers boys. Here’s to the second 6 weeks.
